Jon Cagan Jonathan Cagan, Ph.D.,P.E., is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, with appointments in the School of Design, Biomedical and Health Engineering, and Computer Science. His research, teaching, and consulting are in the area of design theory, methodology, automation, and practice, with nearly 50 archival journal publications. Dr. Cagan is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and has served as the Associate Technical Editor of the ASME Journal of Mechanical Design in the area of Design Theory and Methodology (DTM). He also serves on the editorial boards of Research in Engineering Design and Artificial Intelligence for Engineering Design, Analysis and Manufacturing, and has served as the Chair of the ASME DTM committee and of its annual conference. Dr. Cagan has held the Ladd Development Chair of Engineering at CMU. He received his B.S. in 1983 and M.S. in 1985 from the University of Rochester, and his Ph.D. in 1990 from the University of California at Berkeley, all in Mechanical Engineering. Dr. Cagan is the recipient of the National Science Foundation¡äs NYI Award and the Society of Automotive Engineer¡äs Ralph R. Teetor Award for Education. He is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa, Tau Beta Pi, and Sigma Xi National Honor Societies, and the ASME, IDSA, AAAI, SAE, and ASEE Professional Societies.
